Xi’s thought to be included in Constitution

January 19, 2018

The Communist Party of China today 19th January proposed to write Xi Jinping Thought on Socialism with Chinese Characteristics for a New Era into the Constitution.

The arguably more important party constitution was amended at the once-in-five-years 19th Party Congress in October to include Xi’s political thought.

The move was unanimously passed to add Xi’s thought to the constitution. No other leader since Mao has been able to have their name added to an ideology included in the constitution. Deng Xiaoping’s Theory was added in 1997 after his death.

The theory offers guarantees to things like freedom of speech religion and association. As well as a guiding policy on foreign relations and how China should get involved in the world, instead of the policy of keep to itself.

Any amendment to the constitution will need approval by the Chinese parliament, which next meets in March.
